Southern Star Bluegrass was formed in 1977 by Dan Smith and Rick Hinson who managed and operated the band until passing the torch to Larry Jackson Jr. and Royce Burt. Since their formation, Southern Star has performed at bluegrass festivals and bluegrass shows throughout the southeastern United States . In addition to their public performances, Southern Star performs on a regular basis at private parties, company Bar-B-Q's and church functions and services. Southern Star Bluegrass has had the privilege of performing on shows with many Country and Bluegrass Stars such as JIM STAFFORD, BIRDIE HIGGINS, BILL MONROE, JIM AND JESSIE McREYNOLDS, THE WHITES, WILMA LEE COOPER, CONNIE SMITH, JEANNIE PRUITT, JIMMY C. NEWMAN and LITTLE JIMMY DICKENS to name a few.

The Grand Ole Opry

On Friday, October 13, 1995, Southern Star Bluegrass had the honor and privilege to participate in the 70th Anniversary Bluegrass Spectacular at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.

Following their performance on the Bluegrass Spectacular, Southern Star was asked to stay and perform at the Friday night Opry show which is broadcast over the Nationally syndicated WSM radio network.

Just think of how far this music has come in terms of worldwide acceptance since Mr. Bill Monroe named his band what was to become a branch of country music called "Blue Grass".
